Meet our Lowcountry Artists
We have been very fortunate to have many talented artists display their gifts with us over the years. We would like to thank them for all of their contributions.
At this time, Mr. Wes Haynes is the only artist who is still active and producing wonderful pieces.
Mr. Bowen and Ms. Alston have both retired, but we still have a few pieces available for sales from Mr. Bowen.
Wes Haynes, Wood Artist
Wood worker, Wes Haynes, is a gifted artist and longtime St. Matthew’s Church member. He has created a number of very special pieces out of wood reclaimed from the 1965 fire at St. Matthew’s. These pieces include crosses, bookmarks, and boxes made from the steeple wood recovered from the fire. He also has a number of other high quality pieces crafted from a variety of wood types. Each piece is unique and beautiful.
Lewis Bowen, Sr. Hand Carved Silhouette
Lewis Bowen’s charming hand carved silhouettes hearken back to a popular 18th century art form. In 1996, he began showing his work with fewer than a dozen designs. Bowen now features more than 200 scenes and symbols of the Lowcountry, all intricately carved from laminated wood. He also does commissioned silhouette portraits of children. His award winning work can be attractively displayed above a doorway or picture frame, or on a shelf, mantel or desk.
Deborah Alston, Sweetgrass basket weaver
Deborah Alston is a longtime Charleston resident and sweetgrass basket weaver. She has joined us for demonstrations in our courtyard in the past! We are fortunate to have such a wonderfully talented and lovely artist in our midst.
